Proper Technique for Lifting Loads Manually
While machinery is often used for lifting loads, there are still situations where manual lifting is necessary. It’s crucial that workers are well-trained in the proper techniques to avoid serious injuries.
The first rule of manual lifting is to assess the weight of the load before attempting to lift it. If it’s too heavy, ask for help or use assistance equipment. If you decide to proceed, ensure you have the correct posture: keep your feet shoulder-width apart for a stable base, and bend your knees, not your back.
When bending down to lift the load, make sure to keep your back straight and the load as close to your body as possible. This reduces the strain on your spine and prevents potential hernias or muscle injuries. Use your legs to lift, not your back.
As you move with the load, avoid twisting your waist. If you need to change direction, move your feet to pivot your entire body. Twisting your waist with a heavy load can cause lower back injuries.
Finally, don’t rush the process. Manual lifting requires concentration and care. Taking the necessary time to do things correctly will prevent accidents and injuries.
